Use Your Ceiling Fan to Boost AC Efficiency

April 25, 2012

When things start heating up in your Cincinnati home, it usually means it’s time to crank up the AC—but, that isn’t always the case! You can use your ceiling fan to boost the efficiency of your air conditioning and help you feel cooler without spending more on your monthly utility bills and putting added strain on your AC.

Use Without AC – Use the fan as a stand-alone cooling method for as long as possible. If it’s simply hot as opposed to unbearably hot, have the fan running when you’re in a room. The cool breeze will make you feel more comfortable, and it will save you money on your energy bills.

Counterclockwise – When you’re going to run the fan in conjunction with the air conditioning, make sure you set the fan to rotate counterclockwise. This will blow the air downward instead of drawing it up, thereby providing a constant cool breeze in the room.

Set the Thermostat Higher – You’re not going to save yourself very much money or improve the efficiency of your air conditioner if you don’t turn up the heat. Having a ceiling fan running in the room can make it feel between 4 and 7 degrees cooler just by the breeze it creates. This means you can set your thermostat to a higher temperature and enjoy energy saving benefits and lower utility costs—and when your air conditioner doesn’t have to work as hard to cool your home, you’re decreasing the likelihood that you’ll need AC repair in Cincinnati this summer.

Don’t Run the Fan 24/7 – It seems like leaving the fan on continuously would just constantly keep the room cooler; however, this isn’t exactly the case. When you leave the fan running in an empty room, the fan motor is slowly heating up and that heat can be dispersed to the room and make it warmer instead of cooler. So, make sure to turn off the fan whenever you’re leaving the room for an extended period of time.
