Signs You Need a New Cooling System

March 15, 2017

Is it time for a new air conditioner? If you’re asking yourself this question, you’re probably dealing with an old, inefficient cooling system that’s on its last leg. Sometimes, when your system breaks down completely, the answer is obvious, but at other times, it’s less so. At Rick’s Heating & Cooling, we want you to feel confident in your decision for an air conditioner replacement, which is why we’ve put together a list of warning signs to watch out for.

5 Telltale Signs It’s Time for a New System

Here are five different things you can watch for that show that it may be time to think about replacement:

Age of the System

First, consider how old your system is. You can expect to get about 15 years out of a system with the proper maintenance, but after about 10 the efficiency starts to drop. Once you reach a decade of use, it’s time to start thinking about repair before you end up with high repair bills and high energy bills.

Types of Refrigerant

If your air conditioner uses R 22 Freon, then you may want to upgrade. This type of refrigerant is on its way out, and as it becomes less and less common, its cost is increasing. Eventually you’ll need to recharge the refrigerant, and you’ll find that the costs are going to keep going up. Replacing your unit with one that uses the new R410A refrigerant will help you avoid this problem.

Your Energy Bills Keep Going Up

If your energy bills keep creeping up in the summer months, it may be because of your air conditioner. Air conditioners with a SEER rating below 13 are going to be expensive to run. Air conditioners that haven’t been well maintained are going to be inefficient. Both problems will drive up your energy bills. When replacing an inefficient system, look for one that has a SEER rating of at least 13. the higher the SEER rating, the more efficient the system will be.

You’re Paying for Repairs Frequently

Repairs can be another sign to watch for. Most systems are going to need repairs from time to time, but if the repairs are exceptionally expensive, or if they are becoming quite frequent, then replacement may be in order. Often it makes better financial sense to replace the unit than to keep spending money on repairs for an older system.

Your Home Is Uncomfortable

If your home just never seems to get cool, or you have significant hot spots somewhere in the home, then replacement could fix the problem. If your air conditioner isn’t properly sized for your home or is becoming worn out, it can cause the home to be too hot. Replacing it will increase the level of comfort in your home.
