Why Is My Air Conditioner Making a Clicking Noise?

August 10, 2014

Every home has its own unique set of sounds.  The creaks and squeaks in your home and things that go bump in the night, have probably become so regular, you hardly notice them anymore.  It’s only when you hear something out of the ordinary that gives you cause for concern.  Your refrigerator might moan, you may hear a “drip-drip-drip” from deep within your walls, or your pipes could be making a whining noise.  Those unusual sounds can caution you that something is amiss.

As with many of your home’s appliances and fixtures, your air conditioner can also make some strange noises.  Sounds such as clicking, whirring, and squealing can all be a sign your AC needs immediate service.  Whether the noise originates from the outdoor compressor unit, or inside, from the ducts, vents or blower, you should call an HVAC professional right away to rule out any serious problems.

Clicking Sound Coming From Air Conditioner

If your air conditioner is making a clicking noise, it can be a lot more than just annoying to hear—a clicking sound may indicate a serious breakdown, such as an electrical issue with the relay or thermostat.  In this case, never attempt an electrical or HVAC repair on your own.  Licensed technicians can correctly diagnose and repair the problem, without damage or risk to your air conditioning system, or your home.

The clicking sound could be mechanical, such as a broken or damaged

  • Piston
  • Valve
  • Belt
  • Fan

If the clicking sounds “electrical” (similar to that of a dead battery on a car, when you attempt to engage the ignition), and your AC engages but doesn’t stay on, or shuts off immediately, it may mean your compressor is faulty.  An HVAC technician can inspect your cooling system and repair or replace your compressor.  Your home will be cool and comfortable in no time, no matter how hot or humid the Ohio air is outside.

Abnormal Air Conditioner Noises

Some sounds are just a normal characteristic of air conditioning systems.  The hums and vibrations which indicate your system is operating, the muffled noises upon starting up or shutting off, and the whistles and buzzing of your vent covers are all fairly normal sounds.

Not normal sounds from your air conditioner include:

  • Clanging
  • Banging
  • Tweeting
  • Chirping
  • Squealing
  • Rattling

In fact, just as with clicking, these noises could be indicative of a damaged component. By putting off repair service, you could risk your entire cooling system.
